ABOUT NKOMAZI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

A multi-million-rand upgrade has taken Nkomazi Private Game Reserve to a new level. The luxe glamping lodge, located above the banks of the Komati River in Mpumalanga offers 14 handcrafted, air-conditioned luxury tents, each with a private splash pool, outdoor shower and standalone Victorian bath.

The tents, which are either river- or reserve-facing, are linked via stone paths that wind through riverine forest, weeping wisterias and succulent gardens, but are far enough apart to ensure privacy. Glass doors at the tent entrance allow natural light to flood in and ensure beautiful views. The decor is minimalist and tasteful, incorporating statement pieces reminiscent of the vintage safari era.

One of South Africa’s most beautiful provinces, Mpumalanga is famed for its pristine wilderness and wildlife density, endemic flora and rare volcanic rock formations that date back three billion years. With just under 15,000 hectares of protected habitat under conservation, Nkomazi harnesses the ultimate safari offering.

The bio-diverse reserve is in a classified malaria-free zone and has both Highveld and Lowveld game, 300 bird species, and the Big Four — lions, leopards, elephants and Cape buffalos — as well as cheetahs. In addition to thrilling game drives, activities include birding safaris, guided nature walks, stargazing, catch-and-release fly fishing, visits to San rock paintings on site and pamper sessions at The River Retreat spa. In good weather, guests on the afternoon game drive are treated to a full-service, al fresco long table at a surprise location — just one of the memorable experiences offered at Nkomazi.

The luxurious tent accomodation at The Nkomazi Private Game Reserve

Mealtimes, under the creative hand of Chef Nyoka, are special events. The dining tent in the main lodge has sliding glass doors that lead onto a generous viewing deck, and tables are set in the shadow of the surrounding mountains, with the sound of flowing water below and, if you’re lucky, a visit by Maurice, an opportunistic nagapie (bushbaby). Dinners are also served in the open-air boma and the food is homestyle fare that ranges from the traditional to the contemporary, as well as pizzas made in the pizza oven.

The prize is full board, excluding alcoholic beverages. Subject to availability.

Nkomazi Private Game Reserve is a Newmark destination property. Children of all ages are welcome. To participate in the guided nature walks, the minimum age requirement is 16. A R250 conservation levy applies per person per night, over and above accommodation expenses.
