South Africa’s first affordable (and very much loved) small people mover, the Toyota Avanza is making way for a new star entering the local market. Welcome to the all-new Toyota Rumion –  spacious 7-seater vehicle with compact dimensions,  a four-cylinder petrol engine and good ground clearance. key difference between the Avanza and the Toyota Rumion is the switch to a front-wheel-drive layout for better fuel economy, improved packaging and reduced mechanical componentry.

There’s loads of room as the name implies but also a welcome dash of flair: a trapezoidal radiator grille, large tapered headlampsa prominent crease line extending from the front fender to the rear taillampslarge vertical LED taillamps in the rear and a stylised lower bumper.

The Starlet (launched in 2020) and the Urban Cruiser (which hit our shores in 2021), were the first vehicles to benefit from the Toyota and Suzuki strategic alliance, which brings together Toyotas electrification innovation and Suzukicompact vehicles technology. Both the Starlet and the Urban Cruiser have hit that sweet spot with their target market and are selling extremely well. The Toyota Rumion will be the third product to join the alliance 


The roomy range includes the S, SX and TX. models The S-grade model is aimed at customers looking for function at a low price point. The SX offers a balance between affordability and comfort, while the TX grade is aimed at the leisure buyer looking for enhanced comfort and convenience.

A cool feature of the S-grade is the ventilated cupholders up front, allowing beverages to retain cold or heat.

In addition to aesthetic tweaks, the mid-tier SX sports remote central locking, a rear-window demister, additional rear 12-volt power outlet, steering switches, park distance control and rear air-conditioner. The SX and TX models also boast a double-din audio system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux interfaces playing through four speakers.  

The top-spec TX model is aimed at the family buyer and offers all the trimmings, including keyless entry with push start, automatic air-conditioner, a touchscreen audio system with reverse camera and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality, and a luxurious wood trim finish on the instrument panel. 


All Toyota Rumions have a full-size spare wheeldriver and passenger airbags, ABS, EBD and ISOFIX points, as well as an immobiliser and alarm. They run off a 1.5-litre K15B engine and both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions are offered (grade dependant).

Toyota Connect is available across the rangeoffering telematics services, Wi-Fi hotspot (including complimentary 15Gb data) and vehicle health status. The above can be accessed via the MyToyota App on any smartphone.  
There are five exterior colour options: Mystic Pearl White, Azure Blue, Seal Grey Metallic, Autumn Blaze Red and Shadow Black Pearl.

A four-services/60 000 km service plan is standard on all models, with service intervals at 12-months/15 000 km and a 3-year/100 000 km warranty. Additional service and warranty plan extensions are available on request.
