An affordable and compact crossover vehicle, the brand-new URBAN CRUISER has been designed to play in the city on weekdays, and take you to your next adventure on weekends.

The second product of the Toyota-Suzuki alliance (following the Starlet), the Urban Cruiser joins Toyota’s crossover range, slotting in below the C-HR and the new Corolla Cross that will be produced at Prospecton in KwaZulu-Natal in the fourth quarter
of 2021.

The new Urban Cruiser features rugged urban styling replete with a raised stance, textured side- and wheel-arch mouldings, and bumper guards. The side profile continues the squared-off look with short overhangs, further accentuated by the black wheel mouldings that flow into the lower bumper sections. Roof rails (where fitted) and a roof spoiler add to the urban aesthetic.

Moving to the rear, large rectangular tail lights are complemented by a large tailgate garnish embossed with Urban Cruiser. Echoing the front, the lower apron is finished in textured black with a silver “diffuser” section.

Interior Styling

Here you’ll find a comfortable space with excellent ergonomics and great exterior visibility. The upper fascia houses a large touchscreen infotainment system and ventilation outlets with an elegant piano-black frame. The lower section incorporates the climate-control switchgear, a storage compartment, and power and USB outlets. A sporty three-spoke steering wheel with metallic inserts and steering switches provides a great vantage point for the driver.

The twin-hooded instrument binnacle features easy-to-read elliptical gauges and a centrally mounted Multi-Information Display. A unique feature is the silver trim inserts with 3D cube-shaped motif, which add an element of brightness to the dashboard and door panels.

The Urban Cruiser was designed according to the “compact on the outside, spacious on the inside” mantra, with a relatively short 3  995mm overall length that makes parking manoeuvres a breeze. The rear tailgate has a large aperture for easier loading of items – and if you fold down the rear seats, the luggage capacity expands to 328 litres.

On the road

Powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that delivers 77kW and 138Nm, the Urban Cruiser means fuss-free motoring. You’ll have the option of a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic (depending on grade chosen) – all driving the front wheels.

And speaking of wheels: the Urban Cruiser comes with 16-inch steel versions on the entry model and alloy on the rest, shod with either 205-60-R16 or 215-60-R16 tyres.

Grade & Spec

The Urban Cruiser comes in three grades, using the now-familiar Toyota grade names Xi, Xs and Xr.

The entry-level Xi model features keyless entry with push start, electric windows all round, air-con, tilt-adjustable steering, power-adjustable mirrors, LED headlamps, and LED daytime running lights. Rear Park Distance Control offers drivers additional peace of mind. The touchscreen infotainment system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with seamless smartphone connectivity that will allow you to access and display anything from Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps for navigation, to your favourite music-streaming apps, including Apple Music, Spotify, JOOX and SoundCloud.

The mid-tier Xs model adds body-coloured door handles, power retractable mirrors, and a rear window wiper with demister function. On the inside, the Xs offers auto air-con (climate control) and reverse camera, a secondary glove compartment, rear armrest and 60:40 split backrest.

The top-of-the-range Xr also gets LED fog lamps, automatic headlights, cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rain-sensing wipers, dual 12V power outlets, front armrest, leather steering wheel and two tweeter speakers for the sound system. The convenience factor is amplified by glove-box illumination, a cooled storage compartment, map-reading lights, as well as footwell and luggage compartment illumination.

All Urban Cruiser models are also equipped with the Toyota Connect telematics system that includes an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and complimentary 15GB of data. Once it’s linked to your profile, you can manage your vehicle via the MyToyota app. The intuitive app allows on-demand service bookings, vehicle history and information, tracking data, Toyota Connect data-recharge services, and much more.
