New adventures that scoot you off the couch and get the heart racing are great mood-boosters. And you know we need more of those, right?

Here’s a selection of adrenaline activities in South Africa for you to try, safely, of course, whether you’re a thrill seeker or not…

Take a moment to get up close to Table Mountain, a world heritage site in the Western Cape, doing an activity that encourages you to get ‘dope on a rope’ with Abseil Africa. By that, we mean abseiling down the table-topped mountain – dropping 1000 metres to just above sea level – and then taking a gentle hike back up to the top. While you’re ‘hanging out’, take a moment, calm your adrenaline and gaze out over Camps Bay, the sparkling blue Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles.
Opening times*: Daily between 09h00 and 14h00, seven days a week.
Duration: 45 minutes to an hour.
Cost: R1 195 per person (book online for discounts). Excludes cableway ticket.
To book: Visit https://abseilafrica.co.za

No, you won’t spill your wine – although a little beverage moment may happen after you park your quad bike. This adrenaline activity is all about taking a four-wheel whizz around a gorgeous part of the Cape Winelands, at Rhebokskloof Wine Estate in Paarl, with Wine Valley Adventures. Hire a quad bike (or bring your own) and take a guided tour between the grapevines and up into the forest, where newbies can test their skills on a fun obstacle course.
Opening times*: Seven days a week.
Duration: 30 minutes to two hours.
Costs: From R460 per person for 30 minutes, to R1 035 per person for the two-hour experience (includes snacks and refreshments).

If you’re in Gauteng and surrounds, google ‘ziplining near me’, and you’ll see Ama Zwing Zwing Zip Line Tours, located at Amanzingwe Lodge, close to Hartbeespoort Dam in the Magaliesberg (about 40 minutes’ drive from Joburg). Here you’ll get to zip along 1.3 kilometres of high-tensile cable across the Cradle of Humankind, with seven slides and 20 platforms suspended up to 24 metres above the ground. Talk about an adrenaline rush! Ziplining at speed through the African landscape is a must-do activity for young and old. There’s even a special kids’ tour.
Opening times*: Daily between 08h00 and 15h00. Tours depart every 30 minutes.
Costs: For two to eight people per tour (larger groups are split), R420 per person for adults and R320 per scholar (aged seven years and older).

Everyone who’s a thrill seeker wants to boast they’ve tamed the dragon by going sandboarding in Mossel Bay, home to the world-famous Dragon Dune. It’s considered the ultimate adrenaline activity of its kind. You don’t have to be a pro to participate in the packages offered by Dragon Dune – ride the sand on a board, standing, sitting or on your belly. There are three skill-level dunes to choose from: Baby Dune (100 metres), Big-Boy Dune (180 metres) and the Dragon (170 metres high and 350 metres long). Whatever you choose, it’s a wild ride! Bring closed shoes, drinks and sunscreen.
Opening times*: Seven days a week from 09h30 to 12h30. Afternoon sessions can be arranged.
Duration: Three hours. Book one day in advance.
Cost: From R350 per person. Discounts for groups of 20+.

A high-octane adrenaline rush is in order when you get into the Dune Thrasher, a custom-built, 400-horsepower/V8 dune taming machine, and hit the Atlantis dunes in Cape Town with a professional driver behind the wheel. Cape Town Adrenaline promises it’s ‘heart-racing, mind-blowing off-road insanity’. Are you ready?
Opening times*: Monday to Sunday. Time slot will be confirmed the day before.
Duration: 20 minutes. Bring refreshments, towels, sunscreen and sunglasses.

Another bucket list must-do is bungee jumping with Face Adrenalin at the Bloukrans bridge. The giant leap will have your pulse doing somersaults with you as you free-fall down the 216 metres it takes to get to the Bloukrans River below. The Bloukrans bungee is the world’s highest bridge-based bungee, where you ride a short zip line to the jump point. Once you’ve screamed for your mama the whole way down, you’ll be winched back up to take the skywalk back to solid ground. Epic!
Opening times*: Daily from 09h00 to 17h00. Arrive one hour ahead of your booked time.
Cost: R1 400 per person (there’s no refund if you chicken out!). No kids under 14.
To book: Visit https://www.faceadrenalin.com/

* NOTE: Please note that opening days, dates, times and prices may vary due to Covid-19 restrictions and/or bad weather, so it’s vital to book in advance and follow up before you go.
